February 2014

Happy New Year, and Happy Chinese New Year (31st January) to everyone.  We have not written since November so this article is a reflection of the lovely Christmas we enjoyed at Glebe Court.

Our usual activities continued however, we had lots of outside entertainment including the following:

  • The Bencurtis Choir, 10 strong looking festive in their red and black and sounded lovely.  They got us all in the Christmas mood, especially as our Christmas coffee morning followed the next day.
  • Let it Snow followed from Cat’s Pyjamas Production Co – a one woman show with costumes and dancing.
  • Cinderella panto from Rah Rah Theatre company was great fun and residents joined in all the responses, “behind you” !!
  • Stuart Fiddler came to perform some lovely jazz music on his guitar which was calming and relaxing and enjoyed a lot by some residents.
  • In Christmas week S G Productions performed Winter Wonderland (sponsored by the Glebe Court Residents Support Group) which had two lovely singers, lots of sparkly outfits and great dancing, including a memorable Charleston.  Residents really enjoyed this show and readily joined in.
  • Just when you thought Christmas was over and January was quiet, Gordon Bennett, a cockney party entertainer joined us for a “right good laugh and knees up” and lots of fun was had by all of us.
  • We have had two lovely piano recitals recently, one from Natalie, who has returned from maternity leave and plays a great range of music for us and Tristan a young volunteer who plays from memory and has a fantastic repertoire and played beautifully.  The sound of the piano around the home is very calming.

So as you can see residents have enjoyed a great variety of entertainment and we shall continue to offer this in the year ahead, thanks to increased support from the Glebe Court Residents Support Group (GCRSG)

Our Christmas coffee morning was a great success with lots of visitors coming to look around the stalls which the GCRSG had organised and manned on the day.  Staff and volunteers ran the refreshments and raffle and Martin Charles entertained us with live music from his keyboard in the lounge.  We thank the GCRSG for their help and support with this event.

Avery fabrics in West Wickham High Street, held a cake sale in December on a very  wet and windy day with a view to raising funds for our support group (GCRSG) to benefit our residents.  They raised over £600 which was amazing and they wanted to buy things for the home, so having provided a wish list they have bought us: lamps, cushions, fancy serviettes, tablecloths a new Hi Fi system and for our new “Namaste” sensory room (more to follow in due course) 3 foot spas, towels, lotions, diffusers etc.  This is a most generous donation and we are really grateful for to them for choosing our charity this year.

Residents had fun at our film night on Christmas Eve with popcorn, ice cream and drinks both upstairs and downstairs, with Guys and Dolls showing on the big television screens.

Christmas Day saw Father Christmas deliver lovely presents, beautifully wrapped (thank you Wendy from the GCRSG) for all the residents who later enjoyed a delicious traditional turkey lunch. We were pleased to welcome so many family and friends to join their relatives and the conservatory became another dining room.

On New Year’s Eve our party started with a lively performance from Anna Golden (who kindly stepped in as the booked performer slipped a disc the week before) she got everyone dancing, tapping and joining in and she definitely created a wonderful atmosphere which then carried through to our buffet supper.  Everyone sat round a big, long table stretching the full length of the dining room.  Trevor had arranged for the kitchen, mostly Sue, to prepare a fantastic selection of savoury and sweet treats all washed down with the fizz of pink champagne which we opened with a pop and a cheer!

New Years Day was nice and relaxing for residents who enjoyed a Vienna Concert in the morning and The Sound of Music in the afternoon.

Ah! It all came and went so quickly but it’s been nice to remember the fun we had.

We look forward to 2014 and all the fun and laughs and friendship we offer our residents at Glebe Court who respond with enthusiasm and happiness.
